James Salyards brings twenty years of guitar playing experience to Denver School of Music with over ten years of teaching. James began guitar at 12, studying under Joe Becherria, learning the styles of such players as Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Joe Satriani. He also played guitar in his high school jazz band. He furthered his studies of music at Adams State College.
James is well-versed in theory as well as world music styles, such as Afro Cuban, Middle Eastern, and folk music from Mexico. In addition he’s well-versed in rock, blues, metal, country, punk and progressive music. He is not only a strong lead player but equally proficient at rhythm guitar.
James has performed with several groups, playing guitar, bass guitar, and percussion, as well as lead and backup vocals. He co-produced his own album, Spanglo 13, under the name James Hurtado and has also produced for other artists, ranging in style from Latin hip hop to heavy metal.
